Vegan Caesar Dressing
This Vegan Caesar Dressing harmoniously blends tahini, nutritional yeast and capers to create a flavor profile of creamy, umami depth. Lemon juice, Dijon mustard and minced garlic provide a gentle kick and mimics dairy-based Caesar dressing beautifully. You won’t be needing to buy vegan Caesar Dressing anymore, this will be the only one you’ll ever need, and you’ll want to add it to everything!
Caesar dressing has long been a favorite among salad enthusiasts for its creamy texture and bold, tart flavor. Traditionally made with ingredients like anchovies, Parmesan cheese and egg yolks, classic Caesar dressing is not vegan-friendly in the least, or even vegetarian-friendly. But if you’re vegan, vegetarian, or simply want to avoid or cut back on animal-based foods, we have options! This homemade Vegan Caesar Dressing has all of the flavor and even the same visual appeal as traditional Caesar dressing, without any of the animal products.
In addition to the health benefits of choosing plant-based foods, this type of dietary choice also has positive environment and ethical impacts. By opting for plant-based ingredients over animal-derived ones, you’re reducing your environmental footprint and supporting more sustainable food practices.
Animal agriculture is a leading contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation, water pollution and habitat destruction. Every time you choose to eat plant-based, you’re helping to mitigate these environmental impacts and promote a more sustainable food system.
Furthermore, this Vegan Caesar Dressing naturally doesn’t rely on animal products or contribute to animal suffering. By choosing vegan options, you’re advocating for animal welfare and demonstrating compassion for all living beings. So options like this are guilt-free in more ways than one!
Finding (and especially creating!) foods that have all of these nutritional, environmental and ethical benefits and are still every bit as delicious as you would hope is a truly rewarding and empowering experience. It opens you up to choices that you didn’t know were out there, and allows you to take control of yourself, your decisions, your life and the impact that you make in a world where we so often may feel helpless to outside influences.
I enjoy creating all types of vegan recipes, but some of my favorites are my “extras” recipes; the sauces, dressings, dips, all types of condiments. The bases of many meals are already vegan, and often it’s the condiments that are not. For example, pasta is typically vegan, but any cheese or meat-based sauces are not. Also, a lot of the non-vegan foods that people consume are enjoyable because of the way that they’re seasoned! Meat dishes are a perfect example; they’re seasoned with marinades and rubs to make them palatable.
I love making vegan sauces and dressings because there’s so many things you can do with them, and one of the best qualities about a good Caesar dressing is its versatility. It is absolutely delicious added to a wrap or sandwich, drizzled over roasted vegetables, or used as a dip, and a veganized Caesar dressing is no different!
Tahini: Tahini serves as the creamy base of this dressing, lending it a rich and velvety texture. Made from ground sesame seeds, tahini is not only delicious but also packed with essential nutrients like calcium, iron and healthy fats. Its nutty flavor adds depth to the dressing, making it a standout ingredient.
Nutritional Yeast: Nutritional yeast is a pantry staple for vegans, known for its cheesy, umami flavor. In this recipe, it enhances the savory profile of the Caesar Dressing, providing depth, complexity and additional creaminess, as well. Nutritional yeast is rich in B vitamins and is a great source of B12, which is an essential nutrient that is commonly found in animal-based foods.
Lemon Juice: Fresh lemon juice brightens up this dressing with its tangy acidity, balancing out the richness of the tahini and nutritional yeast. Not only does it contribute to the flavor profile, but it also helps to thin out the dressing to the perfect consistency. Additionally, lemon juice is a great source of vitamin C, offering a boost of antioxidants to support immune health.
Garlic Cloves: Fresh garlic brings necessary bold, aromatic flavor to this dressing. Mincing the garlic helps to release and strengthen the taste, as well as assure that it is distributed throughout the dressing evenly when all of the ingredients are combined. Garlic is not only delicious but also boasts numerous health benefits, including immune-boosting properties and heart health support.
Capers: These briny little gems add a salty, tangy element to your Vegan Caesar Dressing. Chopped capers lend a pop of brightness and color, however, if you don’t have capers, you can still make this dressing without them. The taste will vary slightly, but the rest of the ingredients still create a very appetizing dressing.
Soy Sauce or Liquid Aminos: This will be where most of your salty flavoring comes from. Liquid aminos are simply a lower-sodium alternative to soy sauce, and it’s exclusively what I have and use at home. Both are vegan-friendly, and you can choose to use whichever you prefer.
Black Pepper: A dash of black pepper adds a subtle hint of warmth and spice to the Caesar Dressing, rounding out the flavor profile.
Ingredients
¼ C tahini
2 T nutritional yeast
2 T lemon juice
1 T Dijon mustard
1 garlic clove, minced
1 T capers, chopped
1 tsp soy sauce or liquid aminos
¼ tsp black pepper
3 T water
Instructions
1. Begin by mincing the garlic and roughly chopping the capers.
2. In a bowl, combine the tahini, nutritional yeast, lemon juice, Dijon mustard, minced garlic, chopped capers, soy sauce or liquid aminos and black pepper.
3. Gradually add water to the mixture while stirring until you reach your desired consistency. Adjust the amount of water as needed. At this time, you may also adjust the ratio of the other ingredients to your taste preferences.
4. Refrigerate the Caesar Dressing to allow it to chill until ready to use. It will also thicken a bit as it is stored in the refrigerator. Alternatively, you can blend all of the ingredients together, but they will not have the same texture or visual appeal! Mixing instead of blending simply allows the different ingredients to maintain their unique colors and textures within the dressing.
