Creating this Sweet Vanilla Hummus is as easy as it is rewarding. With just a handful of simple ingredients and a blender or food processor, you’ll be on your way to a flavorful snack that satisfies both your sweet tooth and your nutritional needs.
Like traditional hummus, this Sweet Vanilla Hummu is chickpea-based, and it uses vanilla extract, vanilla protein powder, dairy-free milk, maple syrup and a dash of sea salt. Feel free to get creative with it by using different types of protein powder in place of vanilla, such as chocolate, strawberry or even coffee-flavored! The flavor possibilities are endless.
In addition to playing with flavors, there are many ways you can enjoy your Sweet Vanilla Hummus:
Dip for Fruit: One of the most classic ways to enjoy a sweet hummus is as a dip for fruit. The creamy sweetness of the hummus pairs beautifully with the crisp texture and natural sugars of fruit like strawberries or apple slices. Arrange a colorful fruit platter alongside a bowl of this hummus for a vibrant and healthy snack option at parties or gatherings.
Spread for Bagels or Toasts: Level up your breakfast by spreading this hummus on whole-grain toast or toasted bagels. The creamy texture and subtle sweetness complement the hearty flavor of the bread, creating a satisfying morning meal that’s both nutritious and delicious.
Frosting Substitute: Yes, you can even use this healthy dessert hummus as frosting! Who says frosting has to be loaded with sugar and artificial ingredients? Swap traditional frosting with this hummus for a healthy alternative that still satisfies your sweet tooth. Whether you’re decorating cakes, cupcakes, or cookies, this hummus adds a unique twist to your baked goods while providing a protein boost.
Don’t be afraid to think outside the box and experiment with your homemade Sweet Vanilla Hummus! Use it as a filling for crepes, a topping for oatmeal bowls, or a mix-in for smoothie bowls. There are many possibilities, so let your imagination run wild!
If you’re feeling adventurous, consider taking your Sweet Vanilla Hummus to the next level by experimenting with additional flavor enhancers. Add a dash of cinnamon for a warm, spicy undertone, or try a sprinkle of cocoa powder for a hint of chocolatey goodness. You can also incorporate ingredients like almond extract, nutmeg, or even a splash of citrus juice to add complexity to the flavor profile. Have fun with it and allow your creativity to customize this treat in new and exciting ways!
Aside from its delicious flavor and creamy texture, this Sweet Vanilla Hummus offers a range of health benefits that make it a smart choice for snacking:
High in protein: Thanks to the chickpeas and protein powder, this hummus is packed with protein, which helps keep you feeling full and satisfied.
Rich in fiber: Chickpeas are an excellent source of fiber, which is essential for digestive health and can help regulate blood sugar levels.
Naturally sweetened: Unlike store-bought dessert dips and spreads that are often loaded with refined sugars, this dessert hummus is naturally sweetened with maple syrup, providing a healthier alternative.
As with any recipe, the quality of the ingredients can make a significant difference in the final outcome of a culinary creation. Here’s what you’ll need to whip up a batch of Sweet Vanilla Hummus:
Canned Chickpeas: Chickpeas, also known as garbanzo beans, serve as the base of this hummus. Rich in protein, fiber, and various vitamins and minerals, chickpeas provide a nutritious foundation for this sweet creation.
Vanilla Extract: Vanilla extract adds a sweet and aromatic flavor to the hummus, enhancing its overall taste profile.
Vanilla Protein Powder: Protein powder not only contributes to the creamy texture of the hummus but also boosts its protein content, making it an excellent post-workout snack or midday pick-me-up.
Plant Milk: Typical, savory hummus recipes use water as the liquid component, but because we’re making a dessert hummus, dairy-free milk works well in this and also makes your dip even more creamy! Choose your favorite type, such as almond, soy or oat milk.
Maple Syrup: Maple syrup serves as the natural sweetener in this recipe, imparting a rich caramel-like sweetness that complements the vanilla flavor wonderfully.
Salt: A pinch of salt brings out and enhances the natural flavors of the other ingredients.
Ingredients
1 can chickpeas, drained and rinsed
1 T vanilla extract
1 scoop vanilla protein powder
¼ C plant milk
⅛ C maple syrup
¼ tsp salt
Instructions
1. Combine all ingredients in a blender or food processor and blend or process until smooth. Depending on your appliance’s power, this shouldn’t take more than a couple of minutes. You may need to stop and scrape down the sides of the blender or food processor occasionally to ensure everything is well incorporated.
2. If the hummus is too thick, you can add a bit more dairy-free milk to achieve your desired consistency. Conversely, if it’s too thin, you can add a few more chickpeas or a bit of additional protein powder to thicken it up.
3. Once your Sweet Vanilla Hummus has reached the desired consistency, transfer it to a container and store in the refrigerator until ready to serve. For optimal flavor, allow the hummus to chill for at least 30 minutes before serving.
